A non-degree student studies with CIAMSS without immediately committing to a degree or certificate program.
This option is designed for adults who want the freedom to select individual courses, explore a subject area, deepen personal knowledge, or begin studying with the support of a faculty advisor.
You do not need to enroll to order individual courses. However, CIAMSS recommends free non-degree enrollment for students who would like an advisor to help guide their studies.

Tell CIAMSS about your contact information, interests, and whether you have previously studied with the College.

CIAMSS can use your stated interests to connect you with faculty guidance appropriate to your studies.

Review the course catalog and order the individual courses you would like to study.
4. Study at Your Own Pace
Complete your coursework through CIAMSS independent-study procedures and contact the College when support is needed.
Non-Degree vs. Degree or Certificate Study
Non-Degree Student
- Selects individual courses based on personal interests.
- Does not enter a formal degree or certificate curriculum.
- Pays no non-degree enrollment fee.
- May receive faculty advisor support.
- Does not receive an official non-degree transcript.
Degree or Certificate Student
- Enrolls in a defined academic program.
- Completes required courses for the selected credential.
- Pays the applicable one-time administrative fee.
- Follows formal admissions and academic-record procedures.
- May submit prior education for possible transfer-credit review.
Can I Change My Status Later?
Yes. A non-degree student may transition to degree or certificate status at any time. At that point, the student must complete the degree and certification application and meet the requirements that apply to the selected program.
Questions About Non-Degree Enrollment
Do I have to enroll before ordering a course?
No. You may order individual courses without enrolling. Free non-degree enrollment is recommended when you would like a faculty advisor to assist you.
Is there a fee to become a non-degree student?
No. The non-degree adult educational program does not require an enrollment fee. Course materials, handling, examinations, and other applicable course charges are separate.
Will CIAMSS maintain an official transcript for me?
No. CIAMSS keeps your application and related correspondence in a secure student file, but it does not maintain an official transcript for non-degree students.
Can non-degree courses later count toward a program?
Possible application of previous coursework is determined when you transition to degree or certificate status and your academic plan is reviewed. The source page does not promise that every course will automatically apply.
How do I move into a degree or certificate program?
Complete the Degree and Certification Application and follow the admissions requirements for the program you choose. CIAMSS can then review your academic path with you.
